What's a lifestyle session?

At-home lifestyle sessions are about the connection and love that family members already have for each other. During your session, I'll capture those special, meaningfull moments of the familiy together. If little children are involved, we usually take care of those family shots first so that they can take a break if needed, while I capture parents alone, for example. Family pets are welcome too! We can incorporate a family tradition on these. What do you like to do as a family? Play in the swing, bake cookies, read a book, make a fort? Each session is different, because every family is unique!

If having a newborn lifestyle session, there will also be time for photos of the baby alone, these are usually done when the baby is sleepiest.

Where will we have the session?

For lifestyle sessions, it just makes send that it takes place in your own home, where you can be as confortable as you are used to, also the familiar place helps with children to relax, they are usually excited to show me their rooms or toys! I'll use up to 3 rooms in your home: baby's nursery, master bedroom, and living room.  We can also take some photos outdoors in the patio or porch, if the weather permits.

And I know you are probably worried about how your house should look like for photos. I don't want you to stress over it. You are adjusting to having a new baby at home, you have a very active toddler or maybe you just moved into a new house. Preparing to receive a photographer in your home might be easier than you think. We will only use a few rooms. We will start by opening the blinds to let all the beautiful natural light in. These rooms should be clutter free as much as possible as to not distract from your family. Don't mind if I push a few things out of the way for that perfect shot (I'll put everything back where it was), this is just to capture you on the best light and angle. Because light changes on different season and time of day, it's hard to predict where/when that will be, so the decision is made on the spot. Keeping it clutter free before I arrive helps to move things along faster!

For those sweet cuddling in bed photos, I recommend you have a neutral quilt/bed spread on your bed.

For newborns:

How can I make sure my baby is comfortable and cooperative during the shoot?

Newborns are unpredictable and this shoot is all about them.  Please do not worry about your baby crying or needing to eat during the shoot—It's ok! Newborn sessions are purposely longer to allow for plenty of breaks, feedings, and diaper/outfit changes.  It’s usually a good idea to try and feed your baby right before the session so they’re sleepy and content. Make sure the temperature in the rooms at least 70 degrees.

What should we wear?

I recommend we keep it simple and comfortable. Neutral, light (creams, whites, earth tones, grays or pastel tones) work best as they don't take away from the natural beauty of your family (and baby if it's a newborn session).   You can add pops of color to your outfit, if you wish, by using jewelry or accessories. Solid and neutral tops (and textures like big knits and lace) work best.  Stay away from bold logos and patterns or writing on clothing. For partners and children, the same rules apply. Remember to coordinate their outfits around yours!

What should the baby wear?

I prefer babies dressed very simply in plain onesies, muslin swaddles, cute little outfits with matching baby hats are super adorable too -just remember to keep them comfy!

Do you use props or specialize in stylized newborn poses?

The style of newborn photography that I do is lifestyle sessions.  Rather than posed newborn shots you see in a studio setting, I love to capture the relationship between the new baby and his/her parents and siblings.  This doesn’t mean that I won’t take individual photographs of the baby and capture some great detail shots of his/her little toes and fingers.  I am happy to incorporate any ideas you might have! Feel free to incorporate any special family quilts, heirlooms or baby blankets that you would like to use in the photos.

What can I do to prepare for the session?

This is such a special time in your family’s life.  I know it might be tough, but try to relax!  Moms tend to stress out because this is a new experience and because they want things to be “perfect.”  I will take your baby’s lead and allow him/her to be the focus of the shoot.  If your baby cries, or poops, it’s ok.  I promise!  Just focus on relaxing and cuddling with your sweet new addition and I will create images that you will cherish forever!
